Particle Counting in Pressurized Lines with a High-Pressure Diffuser (HPD)
The purity of gases used in industrial applications is vital for production efficiency and product quality. Argon, helium, CO₂, nitrogen and other similar gases are used in processes such as welding, metal production, cryogenic cooling and extraction to create stable, non-reactive environments. However, particle contamination in these gases can lead to adverse effects such as unwanted reactions, reduced cooling efficiency and quality problems.

Effects of Particle Contamination on Gases
- Argon: Particles that compromise the inert nature of the gas can cause unstable conditions in welding and metal production.
- Helium: Highly sensitive to particles because of its small atomic size, helium can suffer reduced accuracy and efficiency in cryogenic applications and gas chromatography.
- CO₂: Used for its supercritical fluid properties, CO₂ loses performance in extraction and cleaning processes when exposed to particle contamination.
- Nitrogen: In pharmaceutical manufacturing, semiconductors and other sensitive industrial applications, particles in nitrogen put product quality and component integrity at risk.
- Other Inert Gases: The particle content of specialty gases such as neon, xenon and krypton can cause unwanted changes in lighting, imaging and carrier gas applications.
The High-Pressure Diffuser (HPD) used with our ApexZ series instruments is designed to accurately reveal particle contamination in sampling systems operating under high pressure. Integrating with Lighthouse particle counters, the HPD provides a standard solution for sampling CDA, CO₂, nitrogen lines and other similar gases.
Key Features of the HPD
Two Different Versions:
- Vented Version: Releases air into the test area in case of overpressure. The vented HPD is available in 0.1 CFM and 1.0 CFM models (a dedicated model for the ApexZ3 is also available).
- Ported Version: Connects to an exhaust line, allowing overpressure to be directed to a desired area. This version meets different application needs with a range of models, including 0.1, 1.0, 2.0 and 3.5 CFM.

Adjustable Flow Output: By modifying the length of the adjustment tube according to the inlet pressure, the correct flow output is achieved regardless of the pressure of the sampled environment. This feature ensures the measurement accuracy that is critical for isokinetic sampling.
High-Quality Material: The HPD is made of stainless steel, providing durability and cleanability in high-pressure applications. Parts can be easily disassembled and cleaned, and O-rings can be replaced when necessary.
Broad Compatibility: The HPD works with all particle counters in the Lighthouse Solair, Remote, ApexP and ApexZ series. With the right accessory kit, it can also be used with instruments that have a 0.1 CFM flow rate.
Installation and Safety Warnings
To ensure the HPD works correctly and measurement accuracy is maintained, the following points should be observed during installation:
- Follow the Installation Instructions: The HPD must be in the closed position before it is connected to high-pressure sources, and all connections must be made fully and securely.
- Adjustment Tube Setting: The adjustment tube length appropriate for your inlet pressure should be determined from the isokinetic sampling chart. The adjustment tube is set by loosening the lock cap and then fixed in place by tightening it again.
- Do Not Block the Exhaust Ports: The exhaust holes on the vented version and the exhaust port on the ported version must not be covered. This step is critical for properly relieving overpressure and preventing damage to the particle counters.
- Cleaning and Maintenance: Because the HPD can become contaminated with particles during use or storage, it should be cleaned periodically and, if necessary, serviced at certified service centers.
Monitoring particle contamination in industrial gases is indispensable for ensuring quality and safety in production processes. By enabling accurate, isokinetic sampling even under high pressure, high-pressure diffusers safeguard the purity of gases. With its advanced adjustable flow control, two version options and high-quality construction, the HPD plays a critical role in effectively revealing and managing particle contamination in industrial gases.
